ATLANTA, GA – Emory University’s new building for the Candler School of Theology and the Center for Ethics was dedicated today in a ceremony led by Ben Johnson, Chair of Emory’s Board of Trustees.
The new building establishes a cohesive architectural presence that respects the individual identities of the School of Theology and Center for Ethics. The School, with its pitched clay tile roofs, stucco facades, and marble trim helps to frame a gateway to Emory’s historic campus that echoes the University’s Tuscan vocabulary.
The first phase of a two-phase project, the building provides Candler with a 175-seat tiered lecture hall, a classroom designed to support distance learning, seminar-style classrooms, and a variety of spaces for informal community gathering. An atrium will run through the building and will connect with the project’s second phase, which will add the Wesley Teaching Chapel and a new home for the Pitts Theological Library.
The sustainable features of the 75,500 s.f. building, which is registered for LEED Silver certification, includes the recycling of a majority of construction waste and the selection of locally available materials that are high in recycled content.
Shepley Bulfinch was the project’s design architect in association with Cooper Collins Carusi of Atlanta. Shepley Bulfinch’s prior work for Emory includes the 1998 renovation and expansion of Woodruff Library.
