The problems of rising costs and the disruption of churn in hospitals are widespread. The metabolism of hospital planning and construction is slower than demands for adaptability to accommodate new practices, code requirements, and technologies. To accomplish these changes, it is important to look beyond the differences among specific projects to see general principles in the behavior of physical facilities over time.
