RIVERSIDE, CA – The University of California’s Library for the Sciences was renamed to honor former UCR Chancellor Raymond Orbach in a ceremony yesterday. As chancellor from 1992 to 2002, Orbach oversaw a major expansion of campus facilities, including the completion of the science library, and a significant increase in the campus’ student population.
Following the ceremony, Orbach attended a symposium called “Science-based Solutions for the 21st Century: The Legacy of Raymond L. Orbach” in the auditorium of UCR’s new genomics building.
The 106,000 s.f. Raymond L. Orbach Science Library, which was designed by Shepley Bulfinch and opened in 1998, houses nearly 540,000 books, journals, maps, and other scientific resources. One of five campus libraries, it has more than 100 publicly accessible computer workstations, 25 group study rooms, map collection with state of the art cartographic and GIS resources.
The firm also designed the 106,000 s.f. genomics building, which was completed last month in association with RBB Architects of Los Angeles; and the campus’ psychology building, completed in association with HDR Architecture of San Diego, and opened in 2008.
