BOSTON, MA – A team of students representing the Gavin Middle School in South Boston and Shepley Bulfinch presented their urban planning concepts to Boston Mayor Thomas Menino today, one of nine such teams taking part in the event. The presentation was the culmination of the students’ semester-long Citizen Schools Design and Development Apprenticeship.
The design of the Gavin-Shepley team project, the creation of a public park for the redevelopment of the Bayside Expo Center – was honored for its recognition of diversity at Citizen Schools’ December 15 student presentations held at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

The team from Shepley Bulfinch took the Halloween theme of this year’s CANstruction competition to heart today, designing a bubbling cauldron of cans, suspended over a fire from a spit. A recipe for a nutritious “Protein Potion” made from the cauldron sculpture’s ingredients, including cannellini, tuna, artichokes, and olives, accompanied the sculpture.
Shepley was one of eighteen design and construction firms taking part in the annual competition held in cities across the country to create giant sculptures out of cans of food to raise money and visibility for the fight against hunger nationwide. Boston, MA – Shepley Bulfinch is teaming up with Citizen Schools for the Fall 2007 architecture and design teaching and mentoring program.
This year’s program will pair teams from as many as ten Boston public middle schools with area design firms in a citywide design competition for either the Jackson Square or Dudley Square MBTA stations. The scope of design can range from station-specific to a large urban design project. Teams will present their projects for a critique in mid-December.
