What can you come up with to transform a parking lot into a community gathering place, in the face of financial and logistical constraints? That was the challenge facing design teams in the Flat Lot competition in Flint, Michigan. “Knot Lot,” a Shepley Bulfinch team submission, was chosen as one of five finalists from among 221 entries in the competition, which was sponsored by the Flint (Michigan) Public Art Project and the Flint chapter of the AIA.  Knot Lot and other top entries will be part of an exhibition opening in Flint on April 14.

Submergia, a conceptual design for a city of the future developed by Shepley Bulfinch’s Tad Jusczyk , has been recognized in the 3rd Advanced Architecture Contest: The Self-Sufficient City, held in Barcelona earlier this year. The international competition, which attracted more than 700 entries from around the world, was sponsored by the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and Hewlett-Packard.

AUGUSTA, ME – The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine received national honors from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) today when they were presented with a 2009 award for Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel (IDEAS2). The project was one of eleven honored by the AISC as part of its annual nationwide recognition of outstanding achievements in engineering and architecture on structural steel projects.

A Shepley Bulfinch design team has won a prestigious 2009 Unbuilt Architecture Design Award from the Boston Society of Architects.

ecoFLEX, the winning project, was one of ten winning entries chosen from more than 90 submissions in the BSA’s Unbuilt Architecture Design Awards program, which is open to architects from around the world. It was designed for the Tall Emblem Structure competition in Dubai earlier this year.

The Shepley Bulfinch design team of Angela Watson, Luke Voiland, Lauren Deck, and Allan Donnelly, joined by Paul Kassabian of Simpson Gumpertz and Heger, will be honored in November at the BSA Jurors’ Forum during the Build Boston, where the winning boards will be displayed.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Park/A/Strip, a submission from a design team at Shepley Bulfinch, will be one of 25 entries on exhibit later this year at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) as part of “Flip a Strip”, a national architectural design competition.

“Flip a Strip”, which was organized by SMoCA, was intended to inspire creative, new visions for the renovation of small-scale strip shopping plazas. Participants were challenged to re-think and re-design one of three typical strip-mall sites in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area.
