As a long-standing tradition Shepley Bulfinch reaches out to our clients in an annual mailing. For years, this took the form of a signed card or letter, accompanied in recent years by a commemorative poster. What started as a holiday gesture has become an important statement that exemplifies our core values.
Like every project our annual mailer starts with a written strategy: a design brief. This year we drew on our annual internal staff survey for inspiration. Within a section of the survey on differentiation a few key words and ...[more]

How do you match the resounding success of our 2010 Fellowship Poster, designed by Experimental Jetset? By inviting Michael Bierut of Pentagram to design the 2011 poster.
I’d like to share some insights about the design process, strategy, and design thinking behind the poster itself. Our design brief to Michael was essentially to match the quality of the candidates we’re seeking as this year’s Fellow: someone who combines a high-level and perhaps rare combination of extraordinary design talent, creativity, passion, intuition, appetite and ...[more]

The Boole Postgraduate Research Library at University College Cork in Ireland has received a “High Commendation” from the Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) in the Society’s 2010 Library Design Awards, announced earlier this month.
The citation reads, in part, “This… extraordinary environment work[s] well for its audience. The building is linked to its environment and to the rest of the campus through the clever use of materials. The atrium has a wonderful sense of light, making an impressive entrance to the building. There is a strong ...[more]

Shepley Bulfinch has maintained its strong ranking among top architecture firms in the US, in the results of the Giants 300 survey published in Building Design + Construction magazine this month. The firm was ranked 29th overall, and 29th and 54th respectively in education and healthcare design. The survey also gave a nod to Shepley’s environmental commitment, ranking the firm among the country’s top 100 green design firms for the third consecutive year.
The firm’s sustainable projects in the past year include McClay Library at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland, which ...[more]

The LINK received a Merit Award in Interior Design magazine’s Best of the Year 2010 awards, announced in New York on December 3. The Phoenix, Arizona, mixed-use building, which was renovated in 2008, is home to Shepley Bulfinch’s Phoenix design studio.
Located at the heart of Phoenix Cultural District, the 8,000 square foot building is a model of adaptive reuse, with a renovation that re-purposed the structural shell of this two-story mid-century commercial structure and transformed it into building stock for the 21st century. The design studio is located on the second ...[more]
