Design award for Hamline’s Anderson University Center

Hamline - south facadeShepley Bulfinch’s design of the Anderson University Center at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota has won a Facilities Design Award from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), it was announced at ACUI’s annual conference last week.

“This award honors more than the design of the Anderson Center,” said Shepley Bulfinch project designer Luke Voiland. “It recognizes the value of a design and planning process that brought everyone to the table.”

Under construction - Seligman HouseThe transformation of a former Amherst College fraternity house near the main campus into a 44-bed residence hall is now underway, with plans to open in the 2013-2014 academic year.

The 21,000 square foot renovation and expansion of Seligman House, which was built in 1921, preserves the character of the original building and adds a three-story wing that complements it aesthetically. Healt & Biomedical Sciences BldgThe University of Houston celebrated its broadening impact in health care research and care with the dedication of the Health and Biomedical Sciences Building on February 5.

Speaking at the ceremony, University of Houston president and chancellor Renu Khator noted the center’s role in advancing research and education for the University of Houston, a Carnegie Foundation Tier One Research Institution.

Interior Design ranks Shepley among top education designers

Harvard Business School, Hi BuildingShepley Bulfinch was ranked 39th among the country’s leading interior design firms, according to a survey just published in the January issue of Interior Design magazine. The magazine’s annual ranking of the “100 Interior Design Giants” is based on 2012 interior design fees for major architecture and design firms around the US.

Shepley ranked fifth among education design firms, making the survey’s Top 10 in education design for the fourth year in a row. Shepley’s 2012 major education interiors clients included Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Hamline University, and the University of Houston.

Student housing project underway at Purdue

Student housing - West Lafayette, INConstruction is now underway for new student housing being developed by Campus Acquisitions near Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The project received final approval from the city of West Lafayette earlier this month.

The development will transform an under-utilized urban parcel with small commercial structures and an open parking field into a vibrant part of the city landscape. The mixed-use student housing complex establishes a compelling civic presence to this high-profile urban block, with 229 residential units with 489 beds and ground-floor retail that serves the surrounding neighborhood.

Harvard Innovation Lab logoShortly after the buzz around the first anniversary of the opening of the Harvard Innovation Lab, Interior Design magazine announced more good news: a 2012 Best of Year (BOY) Merit Award for the Innovation Lab’s design in the Education category.

Since it opened in late 2011, the i-lab has quickly become a hub for entrepreneurs from across the campus. Ambitions for it are unbounded, as noted in an editorial in the Boston Globe in November 2012, “Success of Harvard’s i-lab could buoy the entire region.”
