Shouldn’t the design of a healthcare facility begin with creating a healthy environment? That’s the argument Angela Watson makes in her article, “LEED by example: Using sustainable design to create a healing environment,” which appears in the January 2010 issue of Healthcare Design magazine. In the article, she discusses the process behind Concord Hospital’s 2008 expansion and renovation, and the hospital’s subsequent receipt of LEED certification, the first in northern New England to be so recognized.

Sunday’s New Haven Register carried a glowing review of the recently completed Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Applauding the designers of the complex 14-story project, reporter Ann DeMatteo called out a number of features for particular note, including the 30-foot granite water wall in the building’s lobby, as well as the seventh-floor healing garden and the extensive use of natural light.
Smilow, which saw its first patients in late October, is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2010. The hospital is targeting a minimum of LEED certification for its sustainable design features.
