Smilow Cancer Hospital receives Green Business Award

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital has been named a winner in the Connecticut Green Business Awards. The cancer hospital, which began seeing its first patients late last year, took top honors in the “New Construction” category.

Smilow Cancer Hospital is one of 25 businesses, organizations, and individuals recognized with Green Business Awards, which were announced in a feature in the January issue of the Connecticut Business News Journal. Using sustainable design to create a healing environment

Shouldn’t the design of a healthcare facility begin with creating a healthy environment? That’s the argument Angela Watson makes in her article, “LEED by example: Using sustainable design to create a healing environment,” which appears in the January 2010 issue of Healthcare Design magazine. In the article, she discusses the process behind Concord Hospital’s 2008 expansion and renovation, and the hospital’s subsequent receipt of LEED certification, the first in northern New England to be so recognized.

Healing by design in critical care

Principals Jennifer Aliber and Angela Watson discuss the creation of therapeutic environments in their contribution to the new book, Design for Critical Care: An Evidence-Based Approach by Kirk Hamilton and Mardelle Shepley. Jennifer and Angela discuss the impact of evidence-based design on patient safety and the quality of care in acute-care facilities.

The book was published by Architectural Press, an imprint of Elsevier, in September.

Praise for Smilow Cancer Hospital

Sunday’s New Haven Register carried a glowing review of the recently completed Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Applauding the designers of the complex 14-story project, reporter Ann DeMatteo called out a number of features for particular note, including the 30-foot granite water wall in the building’s lobby, as well as the seventh-floor healing garden and the extensive use of natural light.

Smilow, which saw its first patients in late October, is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2010. The hospital is targeting a minimum of LEED certification for its sustainable design features.

Elgin celebrates new Sherman Hospital

sherman_hospital_nightELGIN, IL – Sherman Hospital celebrated the mid-December opening of its new campus with a gala event last night., where Sherman administrators, community leaders, donors, and architects celebrated the imminent completion of the hospital.

The hospital is hosting community tours today. The ‘Tree of Life”, in the atrium (pictured here), and hospital’s 15-acre geothermal lake, are among the features that visitors will see. The use of the geothermal lake is expected to save the hospital $1 million annually over conventional heating and cooling costs.

ELGIN, IL – Sherman Hospital will host a community open house on December 6 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm to celebrate the December 15 landmark opening of its new hospital and its 154-acre campus. The hospital is organizing 25- and 60-minute tours of the new facility throughout the open house.

Visitors arriving at the hospital will pass by the manifold room of Sherman’s signature geothermal lake, circled by a walking path and landscaped with native plantings. The 15-acre lake will save the hospital more than $1 million in heating and cooling costs ...[more]
