Icon Plaza honored at LA Commercial Real Estate Awards

The Icon Plaza at USC took home Silver in the LA Business Journal’s 2013 Commercial Real Estate Awards, which were announced on February 25. The 162,000 square foot student residence and retail development, which won in the mixed-use category, brings much-needed housing for USC students at the heart of the USC campus.

“In addition to creating a distinctive and prominent landmark, it was important that the design of the Icon Plaza reinforce a sense of connection to the USC campus,” said Jonah Busick, who oversaw construction and supplemental design.

Environmental Excellence Awards for Windsor & Churn

The paired Phoenix dining destination of Windsor and Churn has taken top category honors in the 32nd annual Valley Forward Environmental Excellence Awards, which were announced on September 29. Windsor and Churn, designed by Shepley Bulfinch with redeveloper Venue Projects and Upward Projects, received Valley Forward’s Crescordia (first place) Award (Historic Preservation) and a Merit Award (Commercial/Mixed-Use).

The Valley Forward Association’s Environmental Excellence Awards (EEA) program is Arizona’s oldest and largest environmental competition.

Dining at the heart of community: Postino East opens

A March 17 community benefit marked the opening of Postino East, a neighborhood dining spot in the heart of downtown Gilbert, Arizona. The 2,700 square foot renovation in the southern end of the former Grainbelt Building is the third locale for Postino WineCafe and the second collaboration between Shepley Bulfinch and Upward Projects.

The design juxtaposes the building’s original yellow painted structural steel beams and exposed CMU walls and concrete floors with wood trusses, warm colors, and carefully selected vintage furniture, décor, and tile. Mixing industrial features with warm colors and ...[more]

Double Cask begins design in Phoenix

Shepley Bulfinch has been selected to design Double Cask, a restaurant, bar and market concept slated to open in Avondale, Arizona, later this year. The project, a 5,700 square foot tenant improvement in a new building shell, is now in the design phase.

Double Cask is Shepley Bulfinch’s latest hospitality project in the Phoenix area in the past 48 months. Craig DeMarco’s Windsor and Churn opened in north central Phoenix earlier this year.

The Windsor and Churn, Phoenix’s two latest dining concepts by the creators of Postino Central, celebrated its grand opening today, with a sense of real excitement among Phoenix food lovers.

The pair of venues showcase the transformation of a mid-century strip-mall building into an “all-American” restaurant with a separate artisan ice cream house that also offers pastries and coffee, creating a hip new gathering spot for Phoenix residents.

The LINK received a Merit Award in Interior Design magazine’s Best of the Year 2010 awards, announced in New York on December 3. The Phoenix, Arizona, mixed-use building, which was renovated in 2008, is home to Shepley Bulfinch’s Phoenix design studio.

Located at the heart of Phoenix Cultural District, the 8,000 square foot building is a model of adaptive reuse, with a renovation that re-purposed the structural shell of this two-story mid-century commercial structure and transformed it into building stock for the 21st century. Two environmental excellence awards for Phoenix LINK

The LINK took top honors in the 30th annual Valley Forward Environmental Excellence Awards, announced in Phoenix on October 2. The mixed-use building, which was renovated in 2008, received a Crescordia (first place) Award (Commercial/Mixed-Use) and a Merit Award (Historic Preservation).

In contrast to prevailing trends, the LINK boldly chooses to preserve the cultural identity of the structure’s facade and neighborhood while re-purposing it.
