Boston MA – Shepley Bulfinch design principal Ralph T. Stephen Kliment’s piece discusses Ralph’s personal and professional challenges and the architectural inspiration that has led to the award-winning designs for which he is widely known.

Shepley Bulfinch’s expansion project for Children’s Hospital Boston was named one of 12 winners of Modern Healthcare’s Award of Excellence in its 21st Annual Design Awards. The 240,000 s.f. project laterally expanded the functions of the hospital’s main building, which the firm designed in 1985, to contiguous space in the new building.

BOSTON, MA — The Africana Studies and Research Center designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott at Cornell University has received the 2006 Gold in Brick Architecture Award. The multicolored brick cladding of the building’s exterior is arranged in three elaborate patterns that allude to African textiles. The earth-tone shades of brick encapsulate the African palette, while the modular shape is perfectly suited to patterning. The cultural and natural beauty of Africa is suggested by the use of deep, saturated colors and bold patterning adapted from sources such as the Jenne Mosque of Mali, Kente cloth and Adinkra symbols for unity, human relations and knowledge. BOSTON, MA — Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott has been selected as one of three winning entries out of 80 project submissions in the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) national House for an Ecologist Competition. BOSTON, MA — Shepley Bulfinch programmed, planned, and designed an addition and renovation that has created a new identity for the Africana Studies and Research Center, meets program needs, and captures the essence of Africana cultures and aesthetics. The $4,000,000 facility includes 6,000 new sf and 11,600 renovated sf. The multicolored brick cladding of the building’s exterior is arranged in three elaborate patterns that allude to African textiles. BOSTON, MA — The new, 55,000 s.f. Zorn Dining Commons, which was completed in October 2005, can accommodate 900 students, features a marketplace servery with five major stations, a faculty dining room with its own servery, a “grab & go” with a separate entrance, a production kitchen that can handle campus wide catering, administrative offices and a small meeting room. The large dining hall can be partitioned off to allow 400-person events apart from and during the daily use of the facility.

BOSTON, MA — Massey Cancer Center’s new Research Laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University opened its doors on May 6th in honor of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Goodwin, Jr. for their generous support.
