UNM Science and Math Learning Center dedicated

The University of New Mexico’s Science & Mathematics Learning Center in Albuquerque was dedicated on March 4, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and building tour. University Regent Carolyn Abeita and President David Schmidly were joined by political and community leaders and senior administrators for the event.

Civic Trust Award commendation for McClay Library

McClay Library at Queen’sUniversity Belfast received a Commendation in the UK’s 2011 Civic Trust Awards held in Manchester, England, on March 4.

Established in 1959, the Civic Trust Awards recognize the best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art. Awards are given to projects of the highest quality design that are judged to have made a positive cultural, social, or economic contribution to the local community.

LEED Silver certification for Marquette Law School

Eckstein Hall, the new home to Marquette University’s Law School, has received LEED Silver certification from the US Green Building Council just months after the building’s completion.

Marquette and the project team were committed to constructing an energy-efficient building and receiving LEED certification.

Affordable housing development in greater Boston

Shepley Bulfinch is proud to be a sponsor of the 11th Annual Greater Boston Affordable Housing Develop-ment Competition.

The competition is designed to focus a new generation of thinkers on the availability and affordability of housing in Massachusetts and the role of housing density in addressing issues of sprawl and community vitality.

This year’s competition matches graduate students from two or more schools with faculty advisors, development professionals, and mentors in architecture and finance. Over a two-month period, each team will produce an affordable housing development plan tailored to a specific site.

Shepley named 2011 Interior Design Giant

Shepley Bulfinch was ranked 37th among the country’s leading interior design firms, according to a survey published in the January issue of Interior Design magazine. The magazine’s annual ranking of the “100 Giants” is based on 2010 interior design fees for major design firms around the US.

The firm ranked sixth among education design firms for the second year in a row. Shepley’s 2010 interiors clients included Duke University, Princeton University, Xavier University (Ohio), and Atlanta University Center/Woodruff Library. Design underway for Harvard Innovation Lab

Design is now underway for the Harvard Innovation Lab (Harvard I-Lab), a campus-wide innovation incubator located on the Harvard Business School campus in Boston.

In announcing the project, Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust said, “The importance of innovation cannot be overstated. It is also of utmost importance and great interest to our students and faculty, many of whom are inventors and entrepreneurs. The lab will foster team-based activities and deepen interactions among both aspiring and experienced innovators across the schools of Harvard.”

Good neighbors: greening downtown Phoenix

Shepley principals Chris Nieto and Joe Herzog joined colleagues from the firm and other Phoenix Community Alliance (PCA) volunteers on January 22 to plant 100 new trees at Steele Indian School Park in the heart of downtown Phoenix. Dozens of members of the community attended Saturday’s event, planting the new trees in the 75-acre park, which is bordered by Central Avenue and Indian School Road.

Major residence, dining complex takes shape at Xavier

Construction is now underway for the new residence hall and dining complex for Xavier University in Cincinnati. With 535 beds in four residence halls, the 240,000 s.f. project will have a dramatic impact in alleviating significant overcrowding and constraints the university has faced in its on-campus student housing. Its 800-seat dining center will replace Xavier’s existing Hoff Marketplace. A green terrace on the dining hall roof will provide recreation space for students.
