Shepley Bulfinch’s design of the Anderson University Center at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota has won a Facilities Design Award from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), it was announced at ACUI’s annual conference last week.
“This award honors more than the design of the Anderson Center,” said Shepley Bulfinch project designer Luke Voiland. “It recognizes the value of a design and planning process that brought everyone to the table.”
Since it opened last fall, the Carol Young Anderson and Dennis L. Anderson Center has become the heart of ...[more]

The Icon Plaza at USC took home Silver in the LA Business Journal’s 2013 Commercial Real Estate Awards, which were announced on February 25. The 162,000 square foot student residence and retail development, which won in the mixed-use category, brings much-needed housing for USC students at the heart of the USC campus.
“In addition to creating a distinctive and prominent landmark, it was important that the design of the Icon Plaza reinforce a sense of connection to the USC campus,” said Jonah Busick, who oversaw construction and supplemental design.
Shepley Bulfinch led a series of major design modifications, including the reorientation of the central courtyard to align with USC’s principal pedestrian axis ...[more]

Construction is now underway for new student housing being developed by Campus Acquisitions near Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The project received final approval from the city of West Lafayette earlier this month.
The development will transform an under-utilized urban parcel with small commercial structures and an open parking field into a vibrant part of the city landscape. The mixed-use student housing complex establishes a compelling civic presence to this high-profile urban block, with 229 residential units with 489 beds and ground-floor retail that serves the surrounding neighborhood.
The five-story ...[more]

How are non-academic buildings defining a vibrant student experience? For Hamline University’s Anderson University Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, it’s all about making connections, as discussed in “New facilities enhance the quality of campus life,” a Trends Report in the January issue of Building Design + Construction.
Not simply a student union, the Anderson Center has become a campus-wide crossroads for students, faculty, and staff, and the gateway from the campus to the city of Saint Paul.
The vision was shaped in the planning process, noted principal Angela ...[more]

Shepley Bulfinch invited Hamline University student Jena Felsheim to be a guest blogger, offering her impressions of the Anderson University Center, which opened this fall:
I feel like I have to issue a warning. I’m easily distracted, I’m impressed by the most banal of things, and I know almost nothing about architecture (the only architectural jargon I know is “buttress”). As much as I would love to be able to stand confidently in a pair of perfectly ironed slacks and offer intelligent musings on architecture, instead I’ll be slouching in a skirt that ...[more]
