How does a liberal arts education remain a valid, viable and affordable pathway for millennial students?
That was the big question at last week’s conference at Wake Forest on Rethinking Success, from the Liberal Arts to Careers in the 21st century, which drew academic and student development leaders from across the country.
Conference participants talked at length about how the skills that are central to academic success are also vital to building a sustainable career in the 21st century. It is imperative that colleges and universities not only support the skills ...[more]

Last week’s publication of the 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC) marks a major milestone in sustainable design, construction, and operations, as we shift from an incentive-based approach toward a regulatory one.
While current building codes were developed to protect life and safety of present building occupants, the IgCC expands its purview to protect the environment on behalf of the wider community, both present and future. This new overlay code builds on current systems of voluntary design guidelines and goals, moving toward mandatory adherence to principles of sustainable ...[more]

I want to share some notes on the 2012 Summer Design Fellowship poster and some thoughts on design communication. Years ago the firm established a ten-week paid Design Fellowship for an exceptional architecture student to work with us over the summer. The application is open to all students who are, at date of submission, enrolled in an accredited professional degree program in the field of architecture.
At some point, to keep things fresh we ...[more]

Shepley Bulfinch has been chosen for the physician-led plan to construct a new Children’s Hospital of Buffalo (NY) on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC).
“Shepley Bulfinch was selected for their expertise in designing clinically complex facilities that emphasize patient- and family-centered care and operational efficiency as well as distinctive architectural forms for many other children’s and women’s hospitals,” said Teresa Quattrin, MD, Pediatrician-in-Chief, Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, and Professor of Pediatrics, Chair, Department of Pediatrics, University of New York at Buffalo.
“Shepley Bulfinch’s approach to our project demonstrates their understanding that collaboration and participation are essential to its success,” said Kevin Fitzpatrick, MD, Chief of Service, OB/GYN, Kaleida Health. ...[more]

The construction of the Library and Learning Commons at Salem State University marked a major milestone today, as the structure was topped off with the last steel beam put in place. In keeping with tradition, an American flag (right) was hoisted to the top of the building, accompanied by a small tree.
The 122,000 s.f. library project is pursuing a minimum of LEED Silver certification. The firm’s other LEED certified university projects include Marquette Law School; additions to Perkins Library at Duke University; and Duke Library at Furman. Shepley Bulfinch also ...[more]
