Woodruff Library dedicated following renovation

In a celebration today attended by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and other dignitaries, the Atlanta University Center (AUC) rededicated the renovated Robert W. Woodruff Library, unveiling its interactive and technology-rich 21st century learning environment.

Shepley Bulfinch’s completion of the first phase of this major renovation included more than 130,000 square feet of the Woodruff Library’s 220,000 square foot facility. The renovation replaced many solid interior walls with glass panels, drawing natural light deep into the space.

Shepley clients top Princeton Review rankings of best college libraries

Four of Shepley Bulfinch’s academic library clients topped the rankings for “Best College Library” in the 2010 Princeton Review survey of students at 373 top US colleges and universities. The four current or recent clients are Harvard (#1); Duke (#2); Princeton (#3), and Colgate (#4). In addition, Furman University, where the firm completed the 2004 LEED Gold Duke Library addition and renovation, was ranked #12.

Rankings were determined by responses from over 122,000 students to the survey question “How do you rate your school’s library facilities?”.

Queen’s new library “a lightship for scholarship”

One of Northern Ireland’s newest landmark buildings – the McClay Library at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland - was officially opened today by one of the University’s most famous alumni, Nobel prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney.

Speaking at the event, Dr Heaney lauded the new library, saying, calling it “a lightship for scholarship…” He went on to comment on how the library represents the role of technology in transforming how students learn.

Ashley Hall School wins design excellence award

The Library and Science Center at the Ashley Hall School in Charleston has received a 2010 Merit Award for Excellence in School Building and Design from CEFPI’s South Carolina chapter.

The center was dedicated in 2009, the centennial year for this independent girls’ school. The school’s rich history informed the project design, which drew inspiration from the proportion and detail of nearby McBee House, the campus’ iconic structure. Campbell Law celebrated as Raleigh’s “intellectual heart”

Campbell University’s School of Law’s move into new facilities in downtown Raleigh was celebrated in this month’s issue of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Spectrum.

In “From the Creek to the Capital” Olivia Weeks discusses the aspirations and challenges behind the creation of a space that is “warm, welcoming, functional, and quietly elegant.” Since opening in September 2009, students’ use of the law library has far exceeded expectations.

Since its move to downtown Raleigh, the law school has received the 2010 Downtown Raleigh Alliance Imprint Award and a 2010 Champion Award.
