Ground broken for new ambulatory care center north of Boston

Danvers, MA – A ground breaking celebration was held today for the new Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in this North Shore community outside of Boston.

The 122,000-square-foot outpatient facility and 80,000-square-foot medical office building are a joint project for North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The center will provide the latest in cardiac diagnostics, suites for minimally invasive surgery, and advanced imaging services, as well as serve as the expanded home of the new MGH–NSMC Cancer Center.

Yale-New Haven Cancer Hospital in NE Real Estate Journal

New Haven, CT – The Yale-New Haven Cancer Hospital was highlighted on the front page of today’s issue of the New England Real Estate Journal.

The fourteen-story, 511,000 s.f. cancer hospital, now under construction in New Haven, will offer comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care. The design of the Center includes a 7000 s.f. healing garden.

The $467 million project is seeking LEED certification from the US Green Building Council, incorporating sustainable design elements such as the recycling of some 20,000 tons of construction waste and the use of low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints and carpets.

Creating an environment that promotes healing complements the development and practice of treatments that heal. That was the thinking behind the design of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital, which has received an Award of Merit in the Connecticut Green Building Council’s (CTGBC) 2011 Green Building Design Awards. Norman Roth, Yale-New Haven’s Senior Vice President of Administration, accepted the award at the June 21 ceremony in New Haven.

The hospital was designed by Shepley Bulfinch and landscape architects Towers|Golde, and built by Turner Construction.

Praise for Smilow Cancer Hospital

Sunday’s New Haven Register carried a glowing review of the recently completed Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Applauding the designers of the complex 14-story project, reporter Ann DeMatteo called out a number of features for particular note, including the 30-foot granite water wall in the building’s lobby, as well as the seventh-floor healing garden and the extensive use of natural light.

Smilow, which saw its first patients in late October, is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2010. The hospital is targeting a minimum of LEED certification for its sustainable design features.

Design award for Hamline’s Anderson University Center

Hamline - south facadeShepley Bulfinch’s design of the Anderson University Center at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota has won a Facilities Design Award from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), it was announced at ACUI’s annual conference last week.

“This award honors more than the design of the Anderson Center,” said Shepley Bulfinch project designer Luke Voiland. “It recognizes the value of a design and planning process that brought everyone to the table.”
