The Library and Science Center at the Ashley Hall School in Charleston has received a 2010 Merit Award for Excellence in School Building and Design from CEFPI’s South Carolina chapter.

The center was dedicated in 2009, the centennial year for this independent girls’ school. The school’s rich history informed the project design, which drew inspiration from the proportion and detail of nearby McBee House, the campus’ iconic structure. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin has won a National Honor Award from the National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association for the terrazzo floors in the hospital’s new West Tower in suburban Milwaukee, which opened in April 2009.

The hospital’s floors, which depict natural elements, were created as a way to transport children from the hospital setting to places in nature, with imagery drawn from botanical and wild life of Wisconsin. PHOENIX, AZ – The renovation and addition of O’Donnell Hall, home to New Mexico State University’s School of Education, was named “Best of 2009 New Mexico” by Southwest Contractor magazine. The annual competition, now in its 12th year, recognizes design and construction excellence in New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada.

Project teams will be honored at an awards ceremony in Albuquerque December 8. O’Donnell Hall will also be among the winning projects profiled in the December 2008 issue of the magazine.

AUGUSTA, ME – The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine received national honors from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) today when they were presented with a 2009 award for Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel (IDEAS2). The project was one of eleven honored by the AISC as part of its annual nationwide recognition of outstanding achievements in engineering and architecture on structural steel projects.

A Shepley Bulfinch design team has won a prestigious 2009 Unbuilt Architecture Design Award from the Boston Society of Architects.

ecoFLEX, the winning project, was one of ten winning entries chosen from more than 90 submissions in the BSA’s Unbuilt Architecture Design Awards program, which is open to architects from around the world. It was designed for the Tall Emblem Structure competition in Dubai earlier this year.

The Shepley Bulfinch design team of Angela Watson, Luke Voiland, Lauren Deck, and Allan Donnelly, joined by Paul Kassabian of Simpson Gumpertz and Heger, will be honored in November at the BSA Jurors’ Forum during the Build Boston, where the winning boards will be displayed.

BOSTON, MA – Shepley Bulfinch creative director Dan Vlahos’ design of the firm’s 2009 Summer Design Fellowship poster took top honors last night in the annual AIGA B(oNE) Awards ceremony for the best graphic design in New England.

The poster was one of the category winners in the Best of New England (BoNE) awards, which was sponsored by the New England chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design and held at the Bakalar Gallery at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt).

BROOKLYN, NY – Principal Alexander (Sandy) Howe, one of Shepley’s senior designers, received an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from Brooklyn College as part of the school’s commencement ceremony earlier today. The degree was awarded in recognition of his design achievements in academic architecture, including the Brooklyn College Library, which was completed in 2003.

In addition to Brooklyn College, Sandy’s recent and current clients include the University of Notre Dame, the University of New Mexico, and Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
