Geothermal lake wins $956k US Department of Energy award

WASHINGTON, DC – Sherman Hospital has received a $956,000 award from the US Department of Energy for its geothermal lake at the hospital’s new campus in Elgin, Illinois. The hospital is scheduled to open at the end of the year. In announcing the receipt of the award today, Sherman president and CEO Rick Floyd said, “Sherman Health is honored to receive this award… Our lake is environmentally sound, and we look forward to supporting green energy initiatives in our community and throughout the country.”

The award was funded through the FY08 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, and was designated as one of 117 congressionally directed projects within the Department’s Office ...[more]

University College Cork library wins architecture award

boole_lib_corkCHICAGO, IL – Boole Library, the postgraduate research facility at University College Cork, Ireland, has received a 2008 International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

Built on the site of an ancient settlement the Library’s red sandstone exterior is a contemporary continuation of the settlement’s stone wall, while copper cladding and glass complete the façade. The design also responds to several massive specimen trees from the Victorian botanical garden that once occupied the site. Shepley Bulfinch presented with award for Tennessee library

Shepley Bulfinch was presented with the Palladio Award on March 7 at the annual Traditional Building Conference in Boston. The award was presented for the Paul Barret, Jr, Library at Rhodes College in Memphis, which Shepley Bulfinch designed in association with the Virginia firm of Hanbury Evans Wright and Vlattas.

The project was one of ten recognized in the sixth annual Palladio Awards competition for outstanding work in traditional design. It will be featured in the June 2007 issue of Traditional Building magazine.

Design Principal Ralph Jackson accepted the award on behalf of Shepley Bulfinch from Traditional Building publisher Peter Miller. The design team also included James Hunnewell, AIA, Principal ...[more]

Shepley Bulfinch wins Palladio Award

Boston, MA – Shepley Bulfinch has received the prestigious Palladio Award for the Paul Barret, Jr, Library at Rhodes College in Memphis, which it designed in association with the Norfolk, Virginia, firm of Hanbury Evans Wright and Vlattas.

The project was one of ten recognized in the sixth annual Palladio Awards competition for outstanding work in traditional design.

The Shepley Bulfinch design team includes James Hunnewell, AIA, Principal in Charge; Ralph Jackson, FAIA, Principal for Design; Kevin Triplett, AIA, Project Designer; and Joseph Bille, Interior Designer.

The award will be presented at a ceremony at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston on Wednesday, March 7, as part of the Traditional Building Conference. ...[more]

Children's Hospital Boston wins Modern Healthcare Award

Shepley Bulfinch’s expansion project for Children’s Hospital Boston was named one of 12 winners of Modern Healthcare’s Award of Excellence in its 21st Annual Design Awards. The 240,000 s.f. project laterally expanded the functions of the hospital’s main building, which the firm designed in 1985, to contiguous space in the new building.

BOSTON, MA — Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott has been selected as one of three winning entries out of 80 project submissions in the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) national House for an Ecologist Competition. The award-winning design of the Water Wall House was created by Andre Kamili, Cindy Lee and Jesse Taylor, young designers at Shepley Bulfinch. The winning projects are selected as best-practice examples of a high-performance, sustainable design approach.

Design award for Hamline’s Anderson University Center

Hamline - south facadeShepley Bulfinch’s design of the Anderson University Center at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota has won a Facilities Design Award from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), it was announced at ACUI’s annual conference last week.

“This award honors more than the design of the Anderson Center,” said Shepley Bulfinch project designer Luke Voiland. “It recognizes the value of a design and planning process that brought everyone to the table.”

Cornell’s Africana Studies and Research Center receives award

BOSTON, MA — The Africana Studies and Research Center designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott at Cornell University has received the 2006 Gold in Brick Architecture Award. The multicolored brick cladding of the building’s exterior is arranged in three elaborate patterns that allude to African textiles. The earth-tone shades of brick encapsulate the African palette, while the modular shape is perfectly suited to patterning. The cultural and natural beauty of Africa is suggested by the use of deep, saturated colors and bold patterning adapted from sources such as the Jenne Mosque of Mali, Kente cloth and Adinkra symbols for unity, human relations and knowledge.
