A cover story in the Spring 2010 of Lovett magazine, the Atlanta school’s publication for alumni, parents, and friends of the school, celebrates the new Portman Family Middle School.

The school was dedicated in the fall of 2009.

Design begins for Houston biomedical science center

Shepley Bulfinch has begun schematic design for the new Health and Biomedical Science Center for the University of Houston’s College of Optometry.

The 167,600 s.f. state-of-the-art research and patient eye care center will include an ambulatory surgical center, laser center, specialized research labs, offices, seminar spaces, a new conference facility, and classrooms. It will be located adjacent to the J. Davis Armistead Building on the southern end of the University’s main campus. Lovett School “goes green” with middle school opening

Lovett_MS_ext_1_NaniaATLANTA, GA – The Portman Family Middle School was dedicated at The Lovett School today in a ceremony that drew attention to the school’s commitment to environmental stewardship. From the building’s design and operations to its students’ curriculum, sustainability is integrated throughout the 75,000 s.f. school, which opened for classes in September.

The facility provides sixth through eighth grade students with a technology-rich learning environment, including science labs, a computer lab, art and drama studios, collaborative study rooms, and a 500-seat multi-purpose room.

UCR science library named for former chancellor

ucr_sci_libRIVERSIDE, CA – The University of California’s Library for the Sciences was renamed to honor former UCR Chancellor Raymond Orbach in a ceremony yesterday. As chancellor from 1992 to 2002, Orbach oversaw a major expansion of campus facilities, including the completion of the science library, and a significant increase in the campus’ student population.

Following the ceremony, Orbach attended a symposium called “Science-based Solutions for the 21st Century: The Legacy of Raymond L. Orbach” in the auditorium of UCR’s new genomics building.

Principal Elise Woodward was quoted in an article on the evolving challenges facing women in architecture in the current issue of the Boston Business Journal.

The second woman architect to join the firm when she was hired in 1981, Elise served as a member and chair of Shepley Bulfinch’s Board of Directors She noted the firm’s commitment to a shift in leadership – and firmwide – demographics that have led to a virtually even gender balance among principals and staff as a whole.
