Shepley Bulfinch has won the “Single Space” category in the 2012 Library Interior Design Competition for the Learning Commons for Atlanta University Center’s Robert W. Woodruff Library. The biennial design award is jointly sponsored by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the American Library Association (ALA).

Colorado College marked the renovation of the college’s dining facilities at the Worner Center with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony today on the Center’s south patio. President Jill Tiefenthaler welcomed guests to the event, which was followed by a tour of Rastall Hall.
The renovation has transformed the tired facility into a bright, dynamic social space for Colorado College that is both welcoming and energy-efficient. Central to the project’s success are new serveries with Energy Star-rated equipment and an easy-to-navigate layout. An interactive flat-screen monitors energy consumption in the building.

As the work of the academic year wrapped up in May at Colorado College, another sort of work began, with the summer renovation of Rastall Hall, Benji’s Café, and Colorado Café in the Worner Center.
Students arriving on campus in the fall will find the Worner Center’s dining facilities transformed into a bright and welcoming space. Philadelphia University broke ground Friday on the new home of the College of Design, Engineering, and Commerce. The $20 million academic building is designed to support the innovative curriculum of the new college, which emphasizes interdisciplinary, project-based learning and collaborative problem-solving.

In a celebration today attended by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and other dignitaries, the Atlanta University Center (AUC) rededicated the renovated Robert W. Woodruff Library, unveiling its interactive and technology-rich 21st century learning environment.
Shepley Bulfinch’s completion of the first phase of this major renovation included more than 130,000 square feet of the Woodruff Library’s 220,000 square foot facility. The renovation replaced many solid interior walls with glass panels, drawing natural light deep into the space.

The renovated Robert W. Woodruff Library at Atlanta University Center was among the projects celebrated in American Libraries magazine’s 2010 Architecture Showcase, published online this month.
A 24-hour area (shown at right), with group learning spaces and an e-café, is separated from the rest of the Library by a series of automated glazed panels that secure the collections when the Library is closed without the use of a security grill.
