Queen’s new library “a lightship for scholarship”

One of Northern Ireland’s newest landmark buildings – the McClay Library at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland - was officially opened today by one of the University’s most famous alumni, Nobel prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney.

Speaking at the event, Dr Heaney lauded the new library, saying, calling it “a lightship for scholarship…” He went on to comment on how the library represents the role of technology in transforming how students learn.

Campbell Law celebrated as Raleigh’s “intellectual heart”

Campbell University’s School of Law’s move into new facilities in downtown Raleigh was celebrated in this month’s issue of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Spectrum.

In “From the Creek to the Capital” Olivia Weeks discusses the aspirations and challenges behind the creation of a space that is “warm, welcoming, functional, and quietly elegant.” Since opening in September 2009, students’ use of the law library has far exceeded expectations.

Since its move to downtown Raleigh, the law school has received the 2010 Downtown Raleigh Alliance Imprint Award and a 2010 Champion Award.

New lighting design illuminates historic Sargent murals

Boston Public Library’s new new torchieres for the iconic John Singer Sargent Gallery are celebrated in a feature in the January/February 2010 issue of Architectural Lighting magazine. As Joe Bille, the project’s interior designer, notes in the article, “Conceptually, Shepley’s design goal was to create a fixture that was not so much ‘in’ the space as ‘of’ the space … We used the Sargent murals themselves as a guide and source of inspiration.”  The firm worked with Lam Partners of Cambridge on the lighting installation.

Shepley Bulfinch presented with award for Tennessee library

Shepley Bulfinch was presented with the Palladio Award on March 7 at the annual Traditional Building Conference in Boston. The award was presented for the Paul Barret, Jr, Library at Rhodes College in Memphis, which Shepley Bulfinch designed in association with the Virginia firm of Hanbury Evans Wright and Vlattas.

The project was one of ten recognized in the sixth annual Palladio Awards competition for outstanding work in traditional design. It will be featured in the June 2007 issue of Traditional Building magazine.

Shepley Bulfinch wins Palladio Award

Boston, MA – Shepley Bulfinch has received the prestigious Palladio Award for the Paul Barret, Jr, Library at Rhodes College in Memphis, which it designed in association with the Norfolk, Virginia, firm of Hanbury Evans Wright and Vlattas.

The project was one of ten recognized in the sixth annual Palladio Awards competition for outstanding work in traditional design.

The Shepley Bulfinch design team includes James Hunnewell, AIA, Principal in Charge; Ralph Jackson, FAIA, Principal for Design; Kevin Triplett, AIA, Project Designer; and Joseph Bille, Interior Designer.
