Shepley Bulfinch has selected Susannah Cramer-Greenbaum of the University of Michigan as the firm’s 14th annual Summer Design Fellow. She was chosen for the ten-week Fellowship from a field of close to 100 candidates from the country’s top design schools.

Susannah received her Master’s degree in architecture earlier this month. Her graduate thesis, “Face Value,” explores the aesthetics for the mediation of post-industrial sites. She examined the re-use and re-purposing of former industrial sites in ways that preserve both our industrial legacy and our relationship with the natural environment.

The University of New Mexico’s Science & Mathematics Learning Center in Albuquerque was dedicated on March 4, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and building tour. Shepley Bulfinch has maintained its strong ranking among top architecture firms in the US, in the results of the Giants 300 survey published in Building Design + Construction magazine this month. The firm was ranked 29th overall, and 29th and 54th respectively in education and healthcare design. The survey also gave a nod to Shepley’s environmental commitment, ranking the firm among the country’s top 100 green design firms for the third consecutive year.

The Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences (SCNM) opened its new medical center in Tempe, Arizona, with a dedication on October 8, followed by a public open house the next day. Political and community leaders joined SCNM president Dr. Paul Mittman for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The medical center, located in the college’s main campus, is home to the largest naturopathic medical clinic in the Southwest. The center currently serves over 20,000 patients each year, with the capacity to accommodate up to 75,000.

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Sherman Hospital are among five healthcare facilities recognized for their environmentally responsive design in “Code Green: Examining the Prognosis for Sustainability in Healthcare,” in the August issue of Eco-Structure magazine.

Sherman Hospital opened its new healthcare campus in Elgin, Illinois, in December. The rankings are based on revenues in 2009, a challenging year for the industry.

Architectural Record put Shepley at #79 among A/E/C firms based on total architectural revenue in its survey of the country’s 250 leading design firms.

Healthcare design leader Martha Rothman FAIA, LEED AP, has joined Shepley Bulfinch as a consulting principal.
