MILWAUKEE, WI – The signs are up, the art is hung, and the ribbon has been cut to mark the opening today of the 12-story, 425,000 sf patient tower tower expansion for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Children’s CFO Tim Birkenstock calls the new tower “an essential step needed to keep pace with our patient service demands” for one of the country’s busiest pediatric medical centers, with more than 25,000 inpatient admissions each year.

Detroit celebrated its new home for pediatric specialty care today with blowing bubbles, a youth chorus, and a marching band at the Grand Opening of Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center on the campus of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC).

The $43 million specialty center represents the first completed structure following Vanguard Health Systems’ acquisition of DMC and marks the first major expansion for the campus in nearly 30 years.

Shepley Bulfinch has been chosen for the physician-led plan to construct a new Children’s Hospital of Buffalo (NY) on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC).

In a ceremony earlier today at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan, the final steel beam was raised to the top of the new Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center-Detroit.

Children’s Hospital of Michigan President Herman Gray, MD, provided an update on the specialty center’s progress. DMC President and CEO Mike Duggan joined Dr. Gray in signing the final beam. The program concluded with the traditional placement of the beam with a live evergreen tree on top of the new building.

Three of Shepley Bulfinch’s current pediatric healthcare clients were among those named in US News and World Report’s annual survey of the Best Children’s Hospitals in the US. The survey ranks the top 30 pediatric facilities in each of ten specialty areas.

Children’s Hospital Boston, Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, were recognized in a number of categories. An article by Shepley Bulfinch principal William Mead discussed communication and the role design of the Main South expansion at Children’s Hospital Boston in the July 2007 issue of Healthcare Design magazine.

The 11-story, 250,000 s.f. expansion was designed to foster communications among hospital staff, as well as with patients, and families, an aspect of particular importance in the pediatric acute care environment.

The facility, which opened in 2005, received the 2006 Modern Healthcare Award of Excellence. It incorporates sophisticated medical technology, including the innovative MROR, which bring magnetic resonance imaging technology into the surgical suite.

Detroit Medical Center broke ground today for the new Specialty Center for Children’s Hospital of Michigan in a ceremony attended by federal, state, and regional legislators and community leaders. They joined Vanguard Health System’s Vice President Keith Pitts, Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan, and Children’s Hospital of Michigan President Herman Gray, MD, for the event.
