Clearly good things come in pairs!
Shepley Bulfinch principals Joe Herzog and Chris Nieto have been selected as two of ENR Southwest’s 20 Under 40 Leaders for 2011. Of the 20 individuals honored this year in the Southwest, they are the only two from the same company. Chris and Joe lead Shepley Bulfinch’s Phoenix office.
Selected by a jury of industry experts, the 2011 awards showcase 20 young leaders who have helped shape the region’s design and construction industry.

Shepley Bulfinch has been selected to design Double Cask, a restaurant, bar and market concept slated to open in Avondale, Arizona, later this year. The project, a 5,700 square foot tenant improvement in a new building shell, is now in the design phase.
Double Cask is Shepley Bulfinch’s latest hospitality project in the Phoenix area in the past 48 months. Craig DeMarco’s Windsor and Churn opened in north central Phoenix earlier this year.

The Windsor and Churn, Phoenix’s two latest dining concepts by the creators of Postino Central, celebrated its grand opening today, with a sense of real excitement among Phoenix food lovers.
The pair of venues showcase the transformation of a mid-century strip-mall building into an “all-American” restaurant with a separate artisan ice cream house that also offers pastries and coffee, creating a hip new gathering spot for Phoenix residents.

Shepley Bulfinch principal Chris Nieto has been selected as one of this year’s Forty Under 40 by the Phoenix Business Journal. He will receive the inspiring business award at a June 16 reception to honor the 2011 nominees.
Chris, who co-founded merzproject architecture with partner Joe Herzog as a Phoenix design start-up in 2004, became a principal at Shepley Bulfinch following its merger with merzproject in 2009.

Shepley Bulfinch was ranked 37th among the country’s leading interior design firms, according to a survey published in the January issue of Interior Design magazine. The magazine’s annual ranking of the “100 Giants” is based on 2010 interior design fees for major design firms around the US.
The firm ranked sixth among education design firms for the second year in a row. Shepley’s 2010 interiors clients included Duke University, Princeton University, Xavier University (Ohio), and Atlanta University Center/Woodruff Library. Shepley principals Chris Nieto and Joe Herzog joined colleagues from the firm and other Phoenix Community Alliance (PCA) volunteers on January 22 to plant 100 new trees at Steele Indian School Park in the heart of downtown Phoenix. Dozens of members of the community attended Saturday’s event, planting the new trees in the 75-acre park, which is bordered by Central Avenue and Indian School Road.

Shepley Bulfinch Principal Chris Nieto hosted a December fundraiser at the firm’s Phoenix office for Mia Foutz, a five year old Phoenix girl undergoing treatment for brain cancer. The benefit far exceeded the original $5000 goal, raising over $15,000 for the Foutz family, with the donation total still climbing.
Chris, his wife Becky, and tenants of The LINK, where Shepley’s office is located, came together for the event. The Giant Coffee Bar and Bunky Boutique, located on the first floor of The LINK, opened to the public and donated their proceeds. ...[more]

The Link in Phoenix is highlighted in a feature on successful mixed-use development that appears in the January issue of Building Design+Construction. Principal Chris Nieto discusses the project, which houses the Phoenix office of Shepley Bulfinch and a mix of retail and incubator spaces. The Link has won a number of awards over the past year, including a 2010 Merit Award from Interior Design and two Valley Forward Environmental Excellence awards.
