The creation of Postino East and the transformation of a nondescript commercial building in Gilbert, Arizona, into a lively neighborhood restaurant is the cover story in the latest issue of Retrofit magazine.
In “Growing Roots,” Lauren Bailey of Upward Projects and project designer Ryan Grabe talk about the vision behind the popular Gilbert restaurant and the design thinking that started with an understanding of the surrounding community and the “good bones” of the original building.

The robotics lab at Johns Hopkins’ School of Computer Science and Engineering gets a shout-out in the January 17 issue of Time magazine. The article, “Where the jobs are,” discusses the sectors for job growth in the current economy. Johns Hopkins has established training programs to better match the skills of Baltimore residents with the requirement of the sophisticated bioengineering jobs now being created.

Merzproject’s renovation of a small 1957 office building near downtown Phoenix into the award-winning mixed-use Link is profiled in “Past Forward,” an article in the current issue of Retrofit magazine. The two-story building is a short walk from a major light rail stop, Central Library, and the Phoenix Art Museum. The second floor is now home to merzproject, a studio of Shepley Bulfinch, while a gallery and coffee shop occupy the ground floor. Joe Rondinelli, Senior Associate at Shepley Bulfinch, has been named to the Editorial Advisory Board of Contract magazine. Board responsibilities include participation in the annual Design Forum and a roundtable discussion at NeoCon, as well as advice and input on the magazine’s editorial content. Joe has had a long relationship with the editorial staff at Contract through his participation in judging the “Best of NeoCon ” and for his article contributions over the years to the magazine.

Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was among the innovative hospitals cited for its tranformative quality and use of evidence-based design in its planning, according to the April 2007 issue of Business 2.0 Magazine.
The 750,000 s.f. community hospital, which replaced a previous hospital on the site, creates a healing environment for patients, families, and the community by integrating healthcare services, art, and the natural environment.
