Smilow, Sherman hospitals lauded for sustainable features

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Sherman Hospital are among five healthcare facilities recognized for their environmentally responsive design in “Code Green: Examining the Prognosis for Sustainability in Healthcare,” in the August issue of Eco-Structure magazine.

Sherman Hospital opened its new healthcare campus in Elgin, Illinois, in December. By way of example Bill presents the cases of the replacement campus for Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, and the bed tower expansion for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Three Shepley Bulfinch-designed hospitals have been named finalists for Soliant Health’s 2010 “Top 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals.” Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Connecticut (photo, right); Sherman Hospital, Elgin, Illinois; and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH.

Smilow Cancer Hospital, which saw its first patients in October, creates an oasis of healing in the heart of urban New Haven. Modern Healthcare ranks Shepley 20th nationally in healthcare design

Modern Healthcare ranked Shepley Bulfinch 20th in the country’s top healthcare architecture firms in the 2010 Construction and Design Survey, up nine points from last year. Results of the annual survey were published in the magazine’s March 15 issue.

The firm’s major healthcare clients in 2009 included Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital; Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin; Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary; Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center; Children’s Hospital Boston; and Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, one of the world’s largest geothermal healthcare projects.

Elgin celebrates new Sherman Hospital

sherman_hospital_nightELGIN, IL – Sherman Hospital celebrated the mid-December opening of its new campus with a gala event last night., where Sherman administrators, community leaders, donors, and architects celebrated the imminent completion of the hospital.

The hospital is hosting community tours today. The ‘Tree of Life”, in the atrium (pictured here), and hospital’s 15-acre geothermal lake, are among the features that visitors will see. The use of the geothermal lake is expected to save the hospital $1 million annually over conventional heating and cooling costs.

ELGIN, IL – Sherman Hospital will host a community open house on December 6 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm to celebrate the December 15 landmark opening of its new hospital and its 154-acre campus. The hospital is organizing 25- and 60-minute tours of the new facility throughout the open house.

Visitors arriving at the hospital will pass by the manifold room of Sherman’s signature geothermal lake, circled by a walking path and landscaped with native plantings. The 15-acre lake will save the hospital more than $1 million in heating and cooling costs ...[more]

Modern Healthcare ranked Shepley Bulfinch 29th in the country’s top healthcare architecture firms in the 2008 Construction and Design Survey, published in the magazine’s March 16 issue.

Among the firm’s healthcare work underway or completed in 2008 were projects for Yale-New Haven Hospital; Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary; Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center; Massachusetts General Hospital; and Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois. Sherman Hospital is one of the world’s largest geothermal healthcare projects under construction.

The firm began its healthcare design practice in 1896. Its landmark projects include the iconic New York Hospital-Cornell Medical School and Peking Union Medical College in China.
