Detroit’s new pediatric specialty care center opens

Detroit celebrated its new home for pediatric specialty care today with blowing bubbles, a youth chorus, and a marching band at the Grand Opening of Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center on the campus of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC).

The $43 million specialty center represents the first completed structure following Vanguard Health Systems’ acquisition of DMC and marks the first major expansion for the campus in nearly 30 years.

Shepley Bulfinch selected for Children’s Hospital of Buffalo

Shepley Bulfinch has been chosen for the physician-led plan to construct a new Children’s Hospital of Buffalo (NY) on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC).

“Shepley Bulfinch was selected for their expertise in designing clinically complex facilities that emphasize patient- and family-centered care and operational efficiency as well as distinctive architectural forms for many other children’s and women’s hospitals,” said Teresa Quattrin, MD, Pediatrician-in-Chief, Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, and Professor of Pediatrics, Chair, Department of Pediatrics, University of New York at Buffalo.

One step closer: Construction start for Haitian rehabilitation hospital, education center

Two months before the second anniversary of Haiti’s devastating January 2010 earthquake, the vision of a dignified and productive life for Haitians living with disabilities reached a major milestone this week as construction began on the Center for Rehabilitation and Excellence in St. Marc.

When it opens next year, the 6700 sf facility will transform immediate and long-term delivery of rehabilitation services in central Haiti while dignifying and normalizing the daily lives of people living with disabilities. Construction milestone for Children’s Hospital of Michigan

In a ceremony earlier today at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan, the final steel beam was raised to the top of the new Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center-Detroit.

Children’s Hospital of Michigan President Herman Gray, MD, provided an update on the specialty center’s progress. DMC President and CEO Mike Duggan joined Dr. Gray in signing the final beam. The program concluded with the traditional placement of the beam with a live evergreen tree on top of the new building.

Design with a difference: healthcare in Haiti

Shepley Bulfinch welcomed Partners In Health co-founder Dr. Paul Farmer (“Mountains Beyond Mountains”) to our Boston office today, where he spoke at the unveiling of plans for a new rehabilitation and training center in Haiti.

We partnered with colleagues from Boston’s healthcare and design communities to deliver this pro bono project, joining with Partners in Health, Partners Healthcare, Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, and the Mass Design Group to address the immediate and long-term demand for rehabilitation services in Haiti.
