Architectural materials reinforce the emotional perception of the building in space. An embracing curve of curtainwall, glowing in the heart of the healthcare campus, holds the visitor and public waiting spaces in tight connection to the healing gardens inside and out.
A distinctive brick and punched window composition expresses the rectangular form of the utilitarian spaces behind the curving wall. The building meets the ground plane supported strongly with precast concrete panels with ashlar pattern.

ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Michigan held opening ceremonies for its new 420,000 s.f., $215 million Cardiovascular Center (CVC), a centerpiece of the University of Michigan (U-M) Health System campus. The CVC receives its first patients on June 11.
The CVC provides one-stop access to most of the University’s adult heart and vascular care, and allow U-M specialists from different disciplines to work together as never before.
The Center was designed with two guiding principles: creating an inclusive learning and healing environment for everyone from doctors and patients to visitors; and creating connections through medicine, art, gardens and the natural world.

The Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan is still making news nine months after its June 2007 opening.
The programming and space planning of the 420,000 sf Center, located on the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus, is highlighted in “Extreme Makeover” in the March 2008 issue of Health Facilities Management magazine, while its construction and structural engineering at the the subject of a feature piece (“Campus Core”) in the March 2008 issue of Modern Steel Construction.

Shepley Bulfinch’s design of the Anderson University Center at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota has won a Facilities Design Award from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), it was announced at ACUI’s annual conference last week.
“This award honors more than the design of the Anderson Center,” said Shepley Bulfinch project designer Luke Voiland. “It recognizes the value of a design and planning process that brought everyone to the table.”

LEED certification for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center-Detroit sends a powerful message: helping children grow up healthy starts with a healthy environment. The Center, which was completed in 2012, is the first LEED-certified project on the hospital’s urban campus.

Hamline University celebrated the newest addition to the school’s St. Paul, Minnesota, campus on Friday, with the dedication of the Carol Young Anderson and Dennis L. Anderson University Center.
Hamline President Linda Hanson was joined by alumni, students, faculty, staff, and community leaders for the event, and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman proclaimed October, 5 2012 as Hamline University Anderson Center Day in the city. Composer and pianist Steven C. Anderson, Hamline ’88, debuted “Gratitude,” his musical composition commissioned for the occasion, at the alumni dinner the previous evening.

The University of New Mexico’s Science and Math Learning Center in Albuquerque has received LEEDGold certification from the US Green Building Council.
The LEED® for Schools™ rating system under which it was certified addresses core learning areas and requires higher performance standards for air quality, acoustics, daylighting, and thermal comfort than other LEED programs.
The project deploys a wide range of sustainable design strategies and techniques that focus on enhancing the learning environment and fulfills the University’s commitment to establishing a green footprint.

A “topping out” ceremony on September 9 marked the symbolic installation of the last piece of structural steel for the Health and Biomedical Sciences Center at the University of Houston, which will feature the College of Optometry’s Vision Institute. In keeping with tradition, a small tree and a flag were attached to the steel beam, which bears the signatures of those involved in the project from the university and the design and construction team.
